Components of Car Insurance

When looking for an Auto Insurance carrier, you will have to decide the amount of coverage you will be paying for. Our family at 3rd Generation Insurance has been around long enough to help guide you in your path, getting you the protection you need. These items listen blow are some of the components that will make up your auto insurance policy:

Personal Injury Protection

Personal Injury Protection or (PIP) coverage doesn’t just cover the necessary medical and hospital expenses, but Personal Injury Protection PIP can also help you with loss of income, loss of services, and funeral expenses. In Florida, $10,000 of PIP is required law for any auto insurance policy.

Medical Payment Coverage

No matter who is at fault, medical payment coverage is designed and will help pay for medical expenses for accident related injuries. Some of the covered medical expenses will include: doctor visits, x-rays, surgery, ambulance, and funeral expenses. Medical payment coverage is for you, your passengers, and your family members.

Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Uninsured Motorist Coverage (UM) will help pay claims when the other party involved carries little or no insurance. A recent survey discovered that in Southwest Florida, 1 in 6 drivers have no insurance or carry state minimums (25/50). $25K does not go a long ways in todays society. If unable to acquire the amount necessary to replace your damaged vehicle or injured person, and there was not enough uninsured motorist coverage at the time of the accident, you will have to pay to rest of the amount to repair or replace your property. Therefore, it is recommend that people carry a minimum of 100/300 protection for UM.

Collision Coverage

Collision Coverage will protect your vehicle if you were involved in an accident that was classified as a “collision”. A collision crash would be an accident that involved another vehicle or objects such as: trees, structures, and fences. Collision Coverage will help or completely pay for the replacement or repair of your vehicle minus the deductible. Unless otherwise stated, Insurance companies will pay the “actual cash value” for your car.

NOTICE: Collision coverage will normally include a deductible, and in most cases, the higher the deductible amount the lower your premium is. However, if you were to ever file a claim, having a higher deductible would cost you more in the event of a loss.

If you have any questions about the coverage you carry, reach out to us today or visit it us at a nearby location.

Comprehensive Coverage

In the insurance world, Comprehensive Coverage used to be called “act of God”. This coverage will help pay for any loss that results from accidents that are not considered “collision” accidents. This could include vandalism, a power line falling on your vehicle, or even a hurricane. However, Comprehensive will not only pay for big claims, Comprehensive coverage can pay for broken glass or windshields.

NOTICE: Like collision coverage, comprehensive coverage will normally include a deductible. A good rule of thumb is, the larger your deductible is, the lower your premium will be.

NOTICE: Accidentally cracked or chipped windshields, or broken glass will have NO DEDUCTIBLE cost added to you.

Other Coverages

Depending on your current carrier, your Auto Insurance Policy might include other extra added coverages. Some of these include:

  • Towing and other labor - As well as other services, towing and other labor coverage will help reimburse you for the cost of towing your vehicle.

  • Rental Vehicle Reimbursement - For some people, this coverage is a must have. This option will pay for use of a rental vehicle after an accident, until your car is repaired.

Liability Coverage

Bodily Injury and Property Damage

Liability Coverage is purposed to protect you in the case that you were found guilty of damages to another person. If at fault in an accident that was covered by your auto policy and the other party or property was damaged, liability coverage will let pay cover the cost to fix, repair, or give medical treatment.

We strongly recommend at least 100/300 coverage for Bodily Injury Liability.
100 being $100k per person in the accident, up to $300k total per accident. This will cover all parties involved for the following expenses up to the limits adjusted at the time of binding coverage. Some expenses covered could be:

  • Funeral expenses.

  • Compensation for lost income.

  • Medical expenses for bodily injury.

  • Emergency Medical attention at the scene of the accident.

  • Legal defense fees.

As an agency with time spent in the field, It is good start with at least a minimum of 100k in coverage, Property Damage Liability. Most minor accidents will not cost you more than this, giving you a solid start. Typically, the more you have to protect, the more coverage you will want to carry. Covered liability claims can include:

  • Damage to structures.

  • Vehicle repair or replacement.

Talk to your agent to learn more about the possible liability issues that some people will run into in life.

Frequently Asked Car Insurance Questions

  • There are several ways you can potentially lower your car insurance premiums. Some effective strategies include maintaining a clean driving record, bundling your car insurance with other policies (such as home insurance), increasing your deductible, taking advantage of available discounts (such as safe driver discounts or multi-vehicle discounts), and considering the type of car you drive (as certain cars may be more expensive to insure than others).

  • The types of car insurance coverage you need may vary depending on your specific circumstances and the requirements in your state. However, some common coverage options include liability insurance (to cover damages and injuries you may cause to others), collision insurance (to cover damages to your vehicle in a collision), comprehensive insurance (to cover damages caused by non-collision events like theft or vandalism), and uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage (to protect you if you're involved in an accident with an uninsured or underinsured driver).

  • After a car accident, it's important to prioritize your safety and the safety of others involved. If it's safe to do so, move your vehicle out of traffic, check for injuries, and call emergency services if necessary. Exchange contact and insurance information with the other party involved, gather evidence (such as taking photos and gathering witness statements), and report the accident to your insurance company as soon as possible.

  • Several factors can influence your car insurance rates, including your age, driving history, location, the type of car you drive, your credit history, and the coverage options you choose. Insurance companies assess these factors to determine your level of risk and calculate your premium accordingly.
